HERALD'S ONE WEEK FOOD PANTRY FUNDRAISER BROUGHT $1000

(01/09/2009)
The Herald's one week fundraiser for Calhoun's Community Food Pantry just before Christmas raised $1000.

The pantry's long-time manager, Pete Trippett, says "The entire operation depends on community support, and we're very grateful for to those that have given us a boost."

Calhoun's Community Food Pantry, operated by the First Baptist Church in Grantsville, is supported by about 25 county churches and 25 county groups.

As the economy falters and food prices seemingly rise as fast as the unemployment rolls, the face of hunger is changing.

More and more people are coming to food pantries for help.

The pantry will continue to need financial support during 2009.

The pantry fills the gaps, particularly for the working poor and the unemployed.

One third of Calhoun's kids are living in poverty, with the county ranked 41st in the state, seven other counties have it worse, including Kanawha.

About 80% of Calhoun's school children are eligible for free or reduced lunch.

"People in Calhoun don't want to ask for help," Trippett said, "Too much pride, but new people are starting to come. They're up against the wall."

During the past year, the local pantry filled 2,508 requests.

"We don't put a bunch of strings or requirements on who gets the food," Trippett said, who has been issuing items since 1992.

"We trust that people will not abuse the help the community is providing," he said.

You can continue helping the pantry, by making a check to First Baptist Church, noting FOOD PANTRY on the check, and mailing to First Baptist Church, PO Box 237, Grantsville WV 26147.
