SPENCER MIDDLE FINISHES 2ND IN BRAXTON TOURNEY

There were 6 school teams participating in the Braxton County Middle School Wrestling Tournament, on Saturday Jan. 3, 2009, including Braxton, Dupont, Fayetteville, Logan, Philippi, and Spencer.

Braxton was the tournament champion, with Spencer Middle School finishing 2nd out of 6 teams, with 30 pins. Spencer's only loss was to Braxton, who won by 17 points.

Individually, Spencer had 12 wrestlers who placed in the top 3 in their divisions:

Placing 1st, R.D. Monaghan @ 78#, (5-0) w/ 3 pins and a Tech. Fall; Josh Richards @ 95#, (5-0) w/ 2 pins; John Ash @ 145#, (5-0) w/ 4 pins; Sam Lawson @ 171#, (5-0) w/ 5 pins

Placing 2nd, Dillon Clarkson @ 90#, (4-1) w/ 2 pins; Matt Starcher @ 116#, (4-1) w/ 4 pins; Sean Blosser @ 128#, (4-1) w/ 1 pin; Eli Kennedy @ 155#, (4-1) w/ 2 pins; Mikeal Free @ 190#, (4-1) w/ 2 pins

Placing 3rd, Kenneth Kudrick @ 84#, (3-2); Joe Copley @ 123#, (3-2), w/ 2 pins; Caleb Starcher @ 285#, (2-3) w/ 1 pin

Also participating were Preston Metzger @ 110#; Scotty Gibson @ 135#; Tyler Lee @ 145# w/ 1 pin; Caije Nichols @ 155#; Doug Smith @ 171# w/ 1 pin; and Taylor Lee @ 190#.

Winning all of their contested matches by pin were John Ash, Sam Lawson, and Josh Richards.

On deck, Spencer Middle's next competition is Saturday Jan. 10, at the Spencer Middle School Invitational Tournament, which will be held at Roane County High School.
