RECESSION WATCH: Greenbrier County Takes A Hit, 200 Lumber Jobs

(01/02/2009)
Greenbrier County will take a big recession and globalized market hit.

The Mullican Lumber Company has announced that it will reduce its sawmill operations from two shifts to one shift beginning Monday.

The company plans to close the operation in Ronceverte in a few months.

About 200 people work at the operations, the county's largest private employer.

Mullican says the national recession has had a "dynamic" negative impact on the company.

The globalized timber market, with imports from Russia and China, have put the wood products business, including furniture making, in a deep hole.
