CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE STILL STRIKING WV DEER

(12/24/2008)
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources says five deer killed in Hampshire County during the recent hunting season had a fatal brain disease called Chronic Wasting Disease.

DNR Director Frank Jezioro says all the infected deer were killed in the county's chronic wasting disease containment zone, but it appears the disease is expanding throughout the zone.

The disease was first noted in Hampshire County in 2005.

During three years, 37 deer have been diagnosed with the disease.

Chronic wasting disease is found in deer and elk.

There is no evidence that it poses a risk to humans or domestic animals.
