Up to 400 full-time positions will be created at Gilmer's new federal correctional facility, which has a launching date in Spring, 2002.

The local economic development authority says about 60% of the employees will be new hires, mostly from the area. Applications are being taken for correctional officers.

The new $165 million prison will house about 1,250 inmates, with a smaller minimum security facility near the main site slated to house 150.
