CALHOUN'S $5.2 MILLION WATER PROJECT WILL BE BID - Calhoun Commission Has Busy Agenda

Tim Meeks of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council advised the Calhoun Commission he was confident the bidding process for the long awaited Sand Ridge-Upper West Fork water project would start in about one month.

The 21-mile project in now costing $5.2 million dollars, with funds in place.

About 150 properties orginally signed for water, the Appalachian Regional Commission now saying the system will serve 183 households, two churches, two businesses and a volunteer fire department.

The project streches from the Russett area, Sassafras Ridge, and the Millstone area to Route 16 south to the Upper West Fork Park.

The project includes two water tanks, 70 fire hydrants and a number of pumps.

Residents will benefit from better fire protection and lower insurance rates.

Signers agreed to pay a $100 tap fee and agreed to get water for three years. The average water bill would be about $26 a month, according to Wilma Mace, secretary with the Mt. Zion PSD.

The costs of hooking to the line later are considerably increased.

- The commission voted to finance the purchase of two cardiac units for Calhoun EMS ambulances for $25,000, with EMS repaying the commission, negating a proposal by EMS Director Josh Johnson to finance the purchase through an agency paying interest.

- After a motion failed to give one-time pay raises of $1000 to county employees for Christmas by commissioner Sampson, and a motion by commissioner Helmick to give employees $500 also failed, the commission compromised on $800.

- Tim Meeks of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council, advised the commission that four county residents have expressed interest in flood mitigation buy-outs from FEMA. The commission approved the requests.

- The commission approval a rental agreement for the Little Kanawha Area Development Corporation.

- Resignations accepted from the Calhoun EMS Board approved: Kelly Zwoll, Sarah Tingler, Nancy Bremar, and Dawn Fox.

- The commission appointed three new members to the EMS board: Robert Groves, Sheridan District; Judy Brannon, Sherman District; Kevin Helmick, Washington District. The commission is seeking an EMS board member for Center District.

- Fred Waybright resigned from 911 Advisory Board, replaced by Derek Wright.

- The commission is seeking a volunteer to serve on the county's Building Commission and a representative to serve on the Regional EMS Board.

- Commissioners acknowledged the 2008 completion of the Upper West Fork Walking Trail with a $45,864 grant. The park was awarded a $12,000 grant to install water lines and other utilities in 2007.

- The commission is looking at preparing an application for a Courthouse Security Grant that will like focus on outside lighting.

- The annual Courthouse Christmas Dinner is set for December 18th at 11:30 a.m.
