WV SCHOOL BOARD SEEKING TO BAN SOFT DRINKS

(12/13/2008)
The West Virginia Board of Education is planning on approaching the WV Legislature to outlaw all soft drink sales in state schools.

That would mean repealing a law that allows soft drink sales under certain circumstances.

Board member Barbara Fish says the board should have sole control over food and drink standards in schools, rather than the Legislature.

Board President Delores Cook says she doesn't like the idea, citing an existing board nutrition policy already in use by many counties.

Some West Virginia school principals have opposed a blanket ban on soft drinks, saying sales help them pay for things like sports and field trips.
