STUDY STARTED TO SAVE WELLS LOCKS AND DAM

(12/03/2008)
It's official. A study on how to save Wirt County's historic Wells Locks and Dam started last night at a public meeting in Elizabeth.

The dam has been falling apart for several years, threatening to lower the water table on the Little Kanawha River above the 1800s structure.

Thirty-seven people attended last night's meeting with Randy Campbell from the Army Corps of Engineers.

"It has taken us six to seven years to get to this point, but we are finally having a funded feasibility study to look into the best options at what to do with the Wells Lock and Dam structure," said Campbell.

The study, which apparently has $300,000 from the state and $300,000 from the federal government, is expected to take 12-18 months.

It will involve the Corps of Engineers, the state Department of Environmental Protection, the Division of Natural Resources (which owns the structure), the Wirt County Commission and the public.
