CLENDENIN MAN CRITICAL AFTER ATTEMPTING TO RUN OVER TROOPERS

(12/03/2008)
State Police shot and critically injured a Clendenin man Monday night near Walton who fled from them last week, according to WVSP spokesperson Sgt. Ken McCord.

McCord said the man was the driver of a van involved in an attempt to run over troopers last week near Clendenin.

That man, identified at the time as Stephen Krein of Clendenin, fled into the woods after attempting to strike troopers on Keiffer Fork Road the night of Nov. 26, according to the Charleston Gazette.

Krein is in critical condition after being flown by helicopter to CAMC General Hospital on Monday night.

Troopers caught up with Krein near Walton on Monday night, spotting him near Huffman's Store at US 119 at Ambler Ridge Road.

Officers reportedly ordered him to get out of his truck. McCord said he refused and began to pull out of the parking lot.

Krein hit the police cruiser on the passenger side door and started to drive toward one of the troopers.

The officer used his service weapon and fired in an attempt to stop Krein, McCord said, with one of the shots hitting Krein in the head.

Troopers pulled Krein from the truck and began first aid while calling for an ambulance.

Huffman's Store told WSAZ-TV the entire incident was recorded on the store's TV camera, which was installed following hold-ups.
