Sarah Helen Douglas Johnson - Elizabeth

Sarah Helen Douglas Johnson, 72, of Elizabeth, West Virginia, passed away November 28, 2008, at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, WV.

Sarah was born December 7, 1935, in Parkersburg, WV. She was the daughter of the late Roy Ivel and Mildred Cline Douglas.

Sarah graduated from Wirt County High School and then attended Mountain State Business College. She was a member of the Elizabeth Presbyterian Church. Sarah worked in the health industry for 34 years at St. Joseph's Hospital, Spencer State Hospital and retired from Lakin State Hospital in 1988. After her retirement, she returned to Wirt County and was a caregiver for her mother until her death in 1999.

Sarah volunteered her services in many community organizations. She was past secretary-treasurer for the solid waste authority, secretary for the Wirt County Development Authority and member of the Coplin Clinic Board of Directors.

Sarah was named Volunteer of the Year in 2003 by the Association of West Virginia Solid Waste Authorities due to her participation in the local and state solid waste authority, serving on the county health services board, her participation in Relay for Life and the county "Wetlands Project." She also participated in the international education program Odyssey of the Mind as a judge. She served on the board of Community Development and for many years she was the organist for the Busch Funeral Home and was an avid bowler.

Sarah is survived by her husband, William Johnson; sister and brother-in-law, Martha Lou and William Deel of Milton, WV; nieces and their spouses, Sara Deel and Jeffery Cavender of Huntington, WV, and Susan Deel and Peter Economou of Charleston, WV; and Bill's children and their spouses, Joe and Jody Johnson of Rockport, WV, John and Lisa Johnson of Sellersburg, IN, and Cheryl and Allan Park of Newark, WV.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Busch-Kimes Funeral Home, 836 Washington St., Elizabeth, with the Rev. Robert Stanley and Evangelist Eugene Conger officiating.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Elizabeth.
