VFW POSTS FIGHTING FOR SMOKING EXEMPTION

(10/04/2008)
Regional Veterans of Foreign War posts are attempting to obtain an exemption from the broad stroke clean air rules implemented this month by the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department.

A representative from area VFWs made a second appearance Thursday at the Wood County Commission, asking to be exempt from the Clean Indoor Air Act.

Wood County commissioners told VFW members they have no authority to overrule the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department.

Calhoun's VFW Post 5959 has been affected by the total ban on smoking effective October 1.

Representative Bert Young said "It's your post, it's not like it's an open bar, it's not an open club to anybody, you have to meet requirements. So, that's why we felt we had a little more, I don't want to say right, but thought that we might get an exemption."

Young says the fight will continue with State Veteran's Council.

Bingo parlors are still exempt.
