Calhoun senior runner Anna Sampson was a runaway winner of the Sherman Invitational title while Justin Gerwig led a tightly bunched group of Calhoun runners while winning the boys title.

Because of that the Red Devils boys and girls team swept the championships in the meet held Saturday.

The Red Devils were the veteran team of the field that featured relatively new programs from Van and Sherman and a small group from Riverside.

Sampson won by a fair margin over runner-up Kathy Coon of Riverside.

Freshman Rochelle Gerwig, running without a conflict with her volleyball responsibilities, was the second Calhoun runner. Others included Maria Kisner, Tracy King, Athena Wagoner and Carrie Graffius.

On the boys side the race was close with Gerwig leading the way. Gerwig was coming off an impressive third place finish in the Calhoun Invitational, led the way on the three-lap 3.1 mile course.

Other Calhoun runners included Cai Clothier, Zach Hanshaw, Josh Parsons, Anthony Richards and Daniel Sims. The race was the first of the year for Sims, who also is a member of the Red Devils' football team. Richards ran the race fighting off the effects of a sore ankle suffered in the Calhoun Invitational.

Calhoun's middle school runners included William Baker, David Overbay, Cody Parsons, Hunter Thomas and Monica Heiney.

Teams participating included Van, Sherman, Scott and Calhoun.
