WV KNIFE AND GUN CLUB - Parkersburg Police Shoot Man Brandishing Gun, Boone Man 'Suicide By Cop'

(09/05/2008)
POLICE SHOOT MAN - Parkersburg police have shot a man in an incident where he reportedly brandished a gun.

Police say it happened around 12:30 Thursday morning outside a home near 25th Street and Lincoln Avenue.

Police Chief Gerald Board says a suspect had a gun and was shot outside by an officer.

Board says the suspect was taken to the hospital and is out of surgery in stable condition.

Police said a S.W.A.T team was called to the scene.

IT COULD BE 'SUICIDE BY COP' - Boone County Sheriff Rodney Miller says he and fellow investigators believe 66-year old Jessie White was bent on killing himself Wednesday evening.

Police say White's wife had just left him and it was the tenth anniversary of his son's death in a car wreck.

Sheriff Miller says he was drinking heavily and barricaded himself in a garage near his home in Ottowa, He was heavily armed and refused to give up to officers.

"It looks as though there were some family issues and emotional problems that were taking place that all culminated at the same time," according to Miller.

"I'm not sure that I completely understand it, but it caused this guy to wish to take his own life," said the Sheriff.

Miller and his deputies felt certain from the beginning of a lengthy standoff that White had aspirations of committing "suicide by cop."
