GRANTSVILLE WILL BE BRIGHTENED FOR CHRISTMAS

(09/05/2008)

Grantsville town council members Loretta Stevens and JoAnn Shock are on a mission to light up the town for the holiday season.

Loretta and JoAnn ask the Mayor what he thought of getting new Christmas lights for the town. He said, "Sure, anything you can do to improve the town is a good idea."

The duo began working on the project in April with a goal of 22 Snowflake lights, about five and six feet in diameter.

"They are like the ones displayed in Oglebay Park, Weston, and other municipalities," said Stevens.

Shock said "We started out with a bake sale every Friday and a garage sale every Saturday and contacted various businesses and citizens for financial assistance."

" Everyone has been enthusiastic and helpful," she said.

They have ordered the 22 lights, but are continuing to raise money for large wreathes for the court house and a banner for each entrance into town.

Meanwhile, Darlene Rickard and a group of volunteers have been working at refurbishing the town's old Christmas lights.

"We've been working on them for several months," Rickard said, taking them down to bare frames, repairing them and doing new electrical work.

"We hope they'll be used to brighten up the town for Christmas," she said.

The women said they noticed last year that some of the lights were up, but not working. "We know the economy is bad, but people are still hanging in and doing what they can to support worthwhile community causes," Stevens said.

Shock noted with gas prices so high and prohibitive, people can now come to Grantsville to enjoy the lights. "They will be a source of joy and pride for our community," she said.

There have been some volunteers that would like to decorate the Christmas tree in front of the courthouse.

At the Town Improvement Council meeting there was a suggestion to have businesses decorate windows of their businesses and have a tree lighting ceremony before the Christmas parade and Christmas singing one hour prior to the parade.

Enon Baptist Church has volunteered to sing Christmas carols.

Shock said to contact her if you have a group that would like to sing.

The women said "We would like to thank everyone who has supported this project in any way. May God bless each and every one of you."
