EXPLOSION STRIKES BAYER PLANT IN KANAWHA VALLEY - One Dead, One Missing

12:15 AM - An explosion has occurred at the Bayer Crop Science Plant at Institute, Kanawha County.

Emergency workers at the scene tell say one person was burned, another is missing.

I-64 is closed.

Part of the lower Kanawha Valley has been asked to shelter in place.

Fire is reportedly coming from the building.

Former Calhoun resident Debbie Sears, who lives in Nitro, just told the Herald she felt the explosion in her house, and members of the family can smell an odor.

Regional fire and rescue services are arriving on scene.

1:30 AM - Flames are leaping into the air, but the fire is not spreading.

The fire is contained.

State Fire Marshall Sterling Lewis is on scene, saying he is not experiencing any ill-effects from the explosion-fire.

Local residents say they saw a large ball of fire go into the air when the explosion happened.

6:30 AM - Fire was out at 2 a.m. and roads opened. Kanawha County officials complaining about the slowness of information coming from plant officials.
