ALLEGED CALHOUN HIGH FOOTBALL HAZING INCIDENT INVESTIGATED

(08/12/2008)
The parents of a 16-year-old Orma Calhoun High School football player have filed a compliant with the WV State Police, saying their son was the victim of a hazing incident last Thursday (August 7) during football practice.

"An assault complaint has been filed with the State Police, we are investigating the incident," according to Sgt. Jeff Skidmore of the Grantsville Detachment.

Cpl. Doug Starcher is conducting the investigation, he said.

The parents have indicated they intend to file a formal complaint with the school system.

Calhoun Superintendent of Schools Jane Lynch said "There has been a report of an alleged incident involving members of the varsity football team. It is currently under investigation and we cannot comment at this time."

The parents of the youth are alleging their son's hands and lower legs were bound by tape by team members, he ending up on the locker room floor, after which they say he suffered "severe mental anguish and complications related to the incident."

The incident reportedly happened during lunch hour in the locker room, the parents claim coaches were not present.

Since the alleged incident, the youth has resigned from the team after playing football in the school system for several years.

His parents say he has now been placed in counseling services related to the incident and is now in the process of transferring to another county to attend school.

While school officials say they cannot comment on the incident, sources close to the team have reported that coaches asked players involved in the incident to apologize for their behavior, indicating those players involved in the incident will not be allowed to play in a scheduled scrimmage game.

School board president Cynthia Dale said "Hazing is not tolerated. We are looking into this incident."

The Red Devil's have been attending football practice prior to the opening of the 2008 season.
