In rural Calhoun, times are hard, particularly when it comes to finding a local job.

Calhoun Clerk Richard Kirby recently adverstised for an opening in his office for an administrative assistant and a person that could provide temporary services to other county offices.

The position has a pay range of $15,000-$25,000, starting pay in the low range.

Kirby received 38 applications, 15 with college degrees.

"We really had a lot of excellent applicants, making it a difficult decision," Kirby said.

Kirby says he has selected the person, who will be approved at the next meeting of the county commission.

"It is really pretty sad, knowing that many people are in need of a job," he said.
