SPENCER WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED MAKING INTERSTATE EXIT

(06/30/2008)
A Spencer woman has been seriously hurt in a two-car accident today on Interstate 77-64 near the Leon Sullivan Way exit in downtown Charleston.

Patsy Carter, 61, reportedly broke both arms and had upper body injuries in the 7:30 a.m. accident, according to the Charleston Police Department.

Two others have been taken to a Charleston hospital from two vehicles.

Charleston Police said a Ford Aspire hatchback driven by the injured woman's husband, David Lee Carter, 58, came to a stop in the second lane from the left of the four southbound lanes.

The Carters own Freedom Used Cars on Arnoldsburg Rd. in Spencer.

Williams said Carter apparently stopped in an attempt to reach the far right lane and get off at Leon Sullivan Way.

The exit is a tricky, high traffic situation, requiring drivers to cross multiple lanes to reach the exit.

A blue Ford Contour driven by Mary Elizabeth Miller-Hilts, 36, of Charleston, slammed into the back right of Carter's car.

The vehicles ricocheted off one another and spun, police said.
