The Little Kanawha Community Foundation (LKACF) serving Calhoun and Wirt Counties, has recently been awarded a challenge grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. This challenge grant is to help seed a new scholarship fund for LKACF through the Regional Scholars Investment Initiative (RSII).

The challenge grant from the Benedum Foundation is in the amount of $15,000. In order to successfully complete this challenge, the Board of LKACF must raise $15,000 from the community. Once the $15,000 is raised, the Benedum Foundation will match it with $5,000, which can be spent out in 2009 as scholarships for students in Calhoun and Wirt Counties. The deadline for this challenge is December 31st, 2008.

Any amount can be donated to this challenge. And, if the donor desires to, he or she can attach a name to the gift to either honor or memorialize a loved one. And each year, as awards are made from this fund, the names of the ones that were given in honor or memory of will be announced. This will be to ensure that the legacy of your loved ones lives on.

The RSII is a two-year initiative of Our Community's Foundation - Parkersburg Area Community Foundation (PACF) and Regional Affiliates of Doddridge, Jackson, Little Kanawha (Calhoun/Wirt), Mason and Ritchie Counties. The initiative was kicked off at the Annual Meeting of Our Community's Foundation in January of 2008. The purpose of this initiative is to help build smaller scholarship funds of the Foundation, and to establish new general scholarship funds for PACF and each of the five regional affiliates (LKACF is an affiliate of PACF).

We need the community's help today so we can meet this important challenge from the Benedum Foundation. This challenge will ensure that more educational money is permanently available for the citizens of Calhoun and Wirt Counties.

LKACF is an affiliate of the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation, and its purpose is to establish permanent funds that will support charitable activities in Calhoun and Wirt Counties forever! Also, by its affiliation with PACF, LKACF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and therefore, all donations made are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

LKACF has an Advisory Board that is made up of dedicated volunteers, and includes Jim Bennett, Chair; Fred Rader, Vice Chair; Karen Caltrider, Pat Lydon, Dee Scritchfield, Sandy Osborne, Alvin Engelke, Russ Cline, Diane Ludwig, Dan Metz, Bill Howley, Carrie Brainard and Jim Bruce. To find out more information about the Benedum Foundation challenge and LKACF in general, please contact any of the LKACF Board members or Sarah Holt, LKACF Representative, by calling 304-428-4438 or by e-mail at sarah.holt@pacfwv.com
