SPENCER THIEVES HEIST SAFE AND GUNS

The Roane County Sheriff's Department is investigating the burglary of a Spencer residence.

Parkersburg Rd. resident Don Smith said thieves broke into his house sometime between midnight and 4:30 a.m. last Wednesday morning, entering his house through a rear door.

Smith said they took three rifles, a 12G Remington Red Letter Shot Gun, SKS assault rifle and a 30-30.

They also took a safe weighing about 300 pounds.

"I'm sure by the time it took to carry the safe out and the work it took to get it open, the thieves were very disappointed to find only a few coin sets, some loose change, a few thousand pesos," and a bunch of paperwork," said Smith.

"If converted the pesos would get you a nice meal at McDonald's," he said.

Apparently the thieves pilfered through a camper in Smith's backyard, waiting for him to go to bed.

He said the rear door was being repaired and the alarm was not operating.
