The Calhoun Republicans named new officers at a meeting last night in Grantsville.

Joining Executive Chairman Gaylen Duskey on the Calhoun Republican leadership group are Donna Steigleder as vice chairman, Linda McCartney as secretary, Ann Smith as treasurer and Rick Hosey as director of recruitment and retention.

According to Duskey, members will be sought to fill out the 12-person executive committee. Currently there are two executive committee members: Charles Whipkey in Center District and Charles McKown in Lee District.

Duskey said "In order to be a viable party in Calhoun County the Republicans need to start with a grassroots organizing project that would get current members of the GOP re-energized and get Republicans who have defected to the Democratic Party to come home."

"There is a great need for a two-party system in Calhoun County and we do not have that now," Duskey said.

Last night's meeting was also attended by U.S. Senate candidate Jay Wolfe and West Virginia Executive Chairman of the Republican Party Dr. Doug McKinney.

Wolfe talked about the high cost of gasoline and religious issues, pointing out that he is in favor of drilling in the Anwar Region of Alaska which would lessen America's dependency on foreign oil, stating he was also opposed to partial birth abortions.

The Republican Party will hold its next meeting on July 17 at 6 p.m. in the little court room at the courthouse and will then do a door-to-door canvas in Grantsville on July 19 starting at 9 a.m.

Candidate Wolfe will be in town for the canvas.
