Governor Bob Wise came by the Senior Center in Grantsville yesterday, speaking with the local senior's lunch group. He said he wanted them to know "I'm keeping my promises," referring to the establishment of the new version of the Mountaineer Card to help lower prescription drug costs, and the establishment of the "Promise" scholarships for graduating high school seniors.

"Next year about 3000 West Virginia kids will have costs paid to go to college," he said, providing they maintain a B grade-average and score high enough on the entrance exams. He said he was grateful to Delegate Bill Stemple, who attended the event, for "getting on board" the Promise program, which he said will make a difference in the lives of West Virginia kids.

Wise also spoke briefly about the state being on "high alert" during the terrorist crisis, paying tribute to police, firemen and other agencies who are giving extra time and caution.

He joked about his recent "hunting accident," which left a small cut on his forehead after a rifle he was handed recoiled and struck him while sighting. "My friend got a buck and I got this cut," he said.

He also alluded to the current crisis over malpractice insurance, which is coming to a head in Charleston next week. The principal carrier which covers physicians is pulling out of West Virginia, leaving the delivery system in disarray. Minnie Hamilton CEO Barb Lay spoke to him briefly about it affecting Calhoun County.
