COMMISSION WILL DECIDE ON EMERGENCY SERVICE LEVY - Official County Flag Approved

(06/04/2008)
The Calhoun Commission will make a decision about placing the county's Emergency Service Levy on the November ballot at next month's meeting.

The issue was discussed during Monday's commission meeting.

EMS Director Josh Johnson and OES Director Kathy Wood told commissioners that it is imperative the 5-year levy be renewed by Calhoun voters.

Johnson said the levy rate has not been increased since it first passed in the 1980s, indicating the county ambulance service depends on that money to provide 24-hour service from two stations.

The county's three fire departments receive annual funding from the State of West Virginia, but the ambulance service does not.

"We have to rely on the levy money and collecting fees for services to keep going," Johnson said.

Johnson said EMS might ask that the levy be increased by a small percentage.

The commission is once again attempting to seek funding for an elevator for the courthouse through a Small Cities Block Grant. The cost of an elevator has increased from about $200,000 to about $500,000 during the past ten years.

Calhoun Clerk Richard Kirby is asking the county commissioners for help in removing ineligible voters from the county voting list.

"We try to keep it updated, but it's really difficult with so many people coming and going," said Kirby.

The commission approved the hiring of Brenda Ball for the County Clerk's office.

The commission received no bids for the demolition of the old 911 radio tower at the EMS building at Mt. Zion.

The commission approved the official county flag, with the announcement of the winner of the designing contest to be announced by the County Flag Challenge Committee.

Two new members have been appointed to the Calhoun County EMS Board, Nancy Bremar and Kelli Zwoll.

Della Nichols was placed on the Library Board, replacing Janet Davis.

The commission is seeking workers to repair a leaking roof over the probation office in the courthouse, and fix the ceiling.

A small court security grant will fund several new TV cameras for the courthouse security system.

911 Director Gary Buchanan reported on progress with E-911 addressing, saying all of northern Calhoun has been completed and work is now being done in southern Calhoun.

OES Director Kathy Woods said all county emergency service agencies, fire departments, ambulance service, police agencies and health services must be National Incident Management System (NIMS) compliant before September 1 in order to receive future grant money from state and federal programs.

The commission approved $2,000 to help the Wood Festival Committee to maintain Wayne Underwood Field.
