WALKER APPEARS TO BE WINNER IN HOUSE RACE - Clay Ballot Problems Blamed On Machine

(05/31/2008)
Reports of the official recounts of the 33rd Delegate District race in Gilmer and Clay are not yet available.

Contested is the race between Calhoun's Ron Blankenship and Clay's David Walker.

Unofficially, Walker appears to have about a 40-50 point lead, particularly counting votes from 41 missing early voting ballots in Clay, a face count that happened earlier in the week.

Blankenship reportedly picked up two votes in Clay and ten votes in Gilmer yesterday.

Clay County's clerk Connie Workman said yesterday that the missing ballot problem in Clay is still a problem with the Optical Scanning machine or how it failed to count the 41 ballots.

Candidate Blankenship continued to request the ballots be run through the Optical Scanner, but Workman and the Clay Commission declined, relying on the hand count.

"The numbers are still unclear," said Blankenship.

Calhoun Clerk Richard Kirby said "If there is a problem with the machine or ballots, running them through the machine might help clear up the matter."

Other procedural problems surfaced in the Clay election, including not double locking early ballots, with the county clerk and commission president holding keys, required by election law.

Clay commissioner Jerry Linkinogger said the ballot boxes had been secured in a safe.

Both Clay and Gilmer County are expected to certify their elections next week.
