SENTENCED: SPENCER BANK ROBBER WHO SHAVED HEAD TO AVOID CAPTURE

(05/22/2008)
A Roane County man who tried to elude capture by shaving his head has been sentenced to nine years in prison for robbing the Traders Bank in Spencer.

Roger D. Chapman, 30 (left) whose earlier address was Walton, was on probation for an unlawful wounding conviction last Sept. 6, when he held a knife to the throat of VP David Booth and demanded money from him and from the bank.

Before they complied with his demands, he ran out of the bank and went to a nearby barbershop and had his head shaved.

Tracy Dorsey Chapman, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Charleston says Spencer police and a fire marshal caught Chapman later at the edge of town.

He was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge John T. Copenhaver.
