SMOKE GETTING IN YOUR EYES? - Southern West Virginia Smoke Drifting North

(11/08/2001)
Smoke from southern West Virginia forest fires filled hollers in Sunny Cal today, prompting some local residents to call Calhoun Control-911 to inquire about burning fires. No fires were reported in the county during the past few days, although the woods are at extremely high risk for out-of-control burning. A total no-burn order from Gov. Bob Wise is still in effect.

Firefighters were working to control at least five fires in Kanawha, Wayne, Mingo and McDowell counties, but other smaller fires were springing up around the state. One report said 22.

More than 460 fires have burned 32,000 acres since July 1 due to extremely dry conditions and hot, windy weather. Don Kelley, the Division of Forestry's arson investigator said arrests are pending in three cases. Several other arson arrests have been made.

The West Virginia National Guard had 100 firefighters on the line until Tuesday.
