In slightly over 90 minutes Lady Pioneers basketball coach Dennis Fitzpatrick and five members of the team picked up 300 pounds of trash along city roadways.

Despite Saturday's cold early morning temperatures, work began just before 8 a.m.

Sarah Harvey, of Parkersburg, member of the
Lady Pioneer basketball team, finds a spontaneous
moment of joy on a small merry-go-round.

Fitzpatrick said Saturday's effort was one of several ways the team wants to increase their community involvement. (We want to) "...let the community know we appreciate their support," Fitzpatrick said.

The effort was part of the West Virginia - Make It Shine initiative. Similar efforts are held throughout the state from April 1-13.

Glenville mayor John Bennett volunteered his time at a separate location. Stanley Starcher, city street supervisor, pitched in as well - keeping the Lady Pioneers group in fresh bags as he hauled away the full ones.

Christine DiSabato (L) nabbed the biggest
piece of junk, but had no luck budging
it. Kristen Golden and Harvey look on.

Dennis Fitzpatrick found a wallet with a current driver's license inside.

Two spent pregnancy test kits were cast out along the road.

A nearly new Cadillac hubcap glistened at the edge of the road.

All the girls who "could participate" helped, Fitzpatrick said. Some were out of town or had prior commitments.

Mallory Menendez did a little
"High Adventure" trash pick-up.

Pioneer trash collectors are from the left, head
