Manchin makes reptile official

West Virginia now has an official reptile.

Governor Joe Manchin gave some nervous glances at yesterday's resolution signing, acknowledging a timber rattler a few feet from the podium. The Governor asked, "Couldn't I have done this without the visual aid."

Manchin said he flunked part of a Boy Scout course because he was afraid of snakes.

The guest of honor was safely secured in a glass aquarium.

"When kids come into the office I ask them all of the questions, the state animal, the state fish, and the state bird. This will become the newest question," said Manchin.

The resolution was the idea of students at Romney Middle School in Hampshire County, several who came for the passage of the resolution.

Delegate Ruth Rowan helped the students with their bill, learning last year that it isn't always easy, when the bill failed.

This year the students went back to work, gaining more support.
