FUTURE OF NORMANTOWN SCHOOL LOOKING UP

(03/20/2008)

The future of Normantown Elementary School is looking a little better, according to local school activist and Challenge WV fellow Misty Pritt.

Pritt (pictured right) who is running for Gilmer County Board of Education, said Superintendent Ed Toman went to the WV School Building Authority meeting in Charleston this week, asking for a $599,641 grant to correct problems at the partially-closed school.

Dr. Mark Manchin, director of the SBA, has indicated that Normantown School might be able to take advantage of some emergency flood monies.

The SBA money would be used to eliminate the mold on the school's bottom floor and make other improvements. Currently, some students are being taught in a modular unit placed on the property.

Pritt says Normantown was targeted for closure, with students to be bused to Glenville.

Pritt says a number of issues kept coming for closing the school, including flood plain issues and negative fire marshal reports.

"It has been a real effort by parents and community members to keep our school open," Pritt said.
