Grantsville residents made numerous calls to the 911 Center after a helicopter flew over the area much of Wednesday afternoon and evening, with some reporting they thought the chopper might be in trouble.

Grantsville Police Chief Charles Stephens said the chopper belonged to the Army National Guard and was flying over the area at the request of the Grantsville Police Department.

"It was...for training exercises, aerial photography and intelligence gathering for an ongoing criminal investigation," Stephens said.

Stephens said specific information regarding the fly-over might jeopardize the criminal case.

The chopper is one of four used by the Reconnaissance and Aerial Interdiction Department of the National Guard, whose services are provided to law enforcement without change.
