WV CIVIL WAR BATTLEFIELDS THREATENED

A preservation group says two Civil War battlefields in West Virginia are at risk because of development. Hoke's Run and Shepherdstown battlefields in the Eastern Panhandle are among 15 historic sites listed as at risk by the Civil War Preservation Trust. Housing and commercial development places the historical sites at risk. The group's report lists the 10 most endangered battlefields, including the famous Battle of Antietam field, the site of the single bloodiest day in American history. Civil War Preservation Trust President Jim Lighthizer says suburban sprawl is nearly always the threat.
