A Calhoun County man is facing charges including attempted murder after a Friday police chase that started in downtown Spencer.

Michael Lee Grogg, 23, of Millstone was arrested after the chase that included three collisions with two police cruisers.

Members of the Spencer Police Dept. attempted to stop Grogg (pictured left) at the intersection of Prospect and Looney streets around 4:30 p.m. Grogg's 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass allegedly displayed a fraudulent inspection sticker, according to State Police spokesman Sgt. Kenneth McCord.

Spencer Police Chief Gary Williams said Patrolman Clint Wilson thought he had Grogg's vehicle blocked from escaping. Wilson got out of his cruiser before Grogg backed up, hitting the cruiser in the process. Grogg then drove off.

Grogg fled on Pike Street and then onto U.S. 33/119, heading east out of Spencer.

Trooper P.S. Fisher of the State Police detachment in Spencer became involved in the pursuit and was able to pull in front of Grogg's vehicle in the Bowers Hill area before Grogg allegedly hit the cruiser from behind.

McCord said Grogg then allegedly sideswiped the cruiser as he continued traveling east on U.S. 33/119.

Grogg eventually turned onto Triplett Road, next to the State Police barracks, and traveled a short distance before Fisher was able to get in front of the vehicle again, forcing it to a stop.

Grogg was charged with attempted murder for his actions involving striking the cruiser as well as assault on a police officer, obstructing a police officer, DUI-2nd offense, driving on a license revoked for DUI, reckless driving and several other traffic offenses.

Two passengers in the vehicle during the pursuit were not charged. Their names were not released.

Following his arrest Grogg was arraigned before Magistrate Denver Gandee Jr., who set bond at $311,825.

Grogg was lodged in the Central Regional Jail in lieu of bond pending a preliminary hearing set for Friday.
