A few days after Frank Woodruff Buckles' 107th birthday (See earlier Herald story) saying he was one of only two remaining World War I veterans alive, the other vet Harry Landis died at 108.

Now, West Virginia's Buckles is the only living World War I veteran in the USA.

Last August, the 90th anniversary of his enlistment with the Army, Buckles was presented with the Distinguished West Virginian Award by Gov. Joe Manchin for his military service and lifetime of achievement.
