Despite playing an inspired and spirited game things unraveled at the end as Calhoun failed once again to gets its first victory of the season, falling to home standing Clay 65-52 Tuesday night.

The Red Devils pressed all the right buttons and had Clay befuddled for a good part of the game with a patient offense and a tenacious full court defense and were within a couple of baskets late in the fourth quarter.

But fouls - once again a killer - took away Justin Gerwig and Calhoun struggled both offensively and defensively with the sophomore standout on the bench after fouling out. When that happened Clay increased its four-point lead to the final 15 points.

Gerwig had 10 points for Calhoun but as able to play the middle on both ends of the court, setting the tempo for the Red Devils.

While Gerwig was performing in the middle the Red Devils also had a tremendous game from senior Andrew Norman who had 18 points and a game high 14 rebounds as he beat the taller Panthers inside. Overall, Calhoun out rebounded Clay 35-30.

The Red Devils also got an outstanding game from senior Josh DeWeese. The acrobatic 6-4 DeWeese had a game high 22 points while added 12 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Harold McCumbers was the only other Red Devil to score with two points and five rebounds but Calhoun got an outstanding defensive effort from senior Josh Cain.

Chuck Kendall, Cai Clothier and Tyler Bennett all played critical rolls but failed to score for the 0-16 Red Devils.

Matt Carte led Clay with 17 while J.D. Johnson added 12 and Dylan Vaughn and Sean Duffield 10 apiece.

Clay won the junior varsity game also with a 79-21 victory over the Red Devils.

Clay was led by Luke Klemen with 20 points despite not playing in the first half. Lively backed him with 15.

Kendall led Calhoun, 0-14, with seven while Stuart Fitzwater added four. Daniel Sims and Tyler Bennett had three each and Anthony Richards and McCumbers had two apiece.

Quentin 'Q Dog' Murphy, Joe Overbaugh, Cai Clothier, Dennis Dye, Greg Myers and Jordan Panarello all played but did not score.

Calhoun will try for that elusive first win Friday night when it plays a doubleheader at South Harrison.
