The political battle is on in Braxton County.

Sheriff Howard Carpenter, who can't seek a third term by state law, has filed for the office of Assessor against Arlene Herndon who resigned from the Board of Education to run for the office.

Braxton's current Assessor Larry Clifton filed to run for the office of Magistrate, to be running against current County Commissioner Mike Chapman. Beth Prince Smith will another term as magistrate.

Carolyn Cruickshanks has also filed for the office.

Challenging William C. "Bill" Martin for the office of Prosecuting Attorney - Daniel R. Grindo and Kelly Hamon McLaughlin.

Newcomer Derek V. Long is seeking a County Commission seat currently held by Teresa "Terry" Frame, who is seeking reelection.

Brent Boggs will be unopposed in the Primary for re-election to the House of Delegates.

Following the retirement of Senator Bill Sharpe, newcomer Douglas Eugene Facemire of Sutton will challenge Doug Stalnaker of Weston for the open seat in the 12th Senatorial District.

Circuit Court Judges Richard "Rick" Facemire and Jack Alsop are unopposed, as is Family Court Judge Robert Reed Sowa.

Running in the non-partisan Board of Education race, four candidates will compete for the two vacant seats. Incumbent Ernie Moore has filed for re-election. Also competing in the race will be James "Jimmy" Huffman, Roger W. Hall and Michael C. Jackson.
