At the 1st Annual West Virginia Duals Wrestling Tournament, held in Parkersburg this past weekend, there were 16 high school teams, and 16 middle school-junior high teams, split into 2 pools of 8 teams each.

The Spencer Middle School wrestling team placed 4th out of 8 teams in their middle school-junior high Pool A, which included 9th graders, going (6 and 3) for the weekend, including wins over the Allstar B team (54 to 6); Charlestown (45 to 36); Cheat Lake (43 to 42); Olentangy Liberty (50 to 40); Williamstown (44 to 18); and Hamilton Jr. High (39 to 36). Losses included Greenbrier East Jr. High (36 to 51); Edison Jr. High (22 to 61); and Robert L. Bland (23 to 60).

In the overall 16-team middle school-junior high field, including both Pool A and Pool B, Springboro Jr. High was first at (9 and 0), Edison Jr. High came in 2nd at (8 and 1), Eastside Central Catholic placed 3rd at (7 and 2), and there were 4 teams with (6 and 3) records, including Spencer, Charlestown, Robert L. Bland, and Blennerhassett Jr. High.

Individually for the Yellow Jackets, a couple of school records may have been set this weekend. Jacob Summers wrestled 9 matches at the WV Duals at 123#, with no forfeits or decisions, and pinned all 9 opponents, raising his season record to (43 and 9, with 26 pins). Dylan Cottrell continues his undefeated winning streak at 90#, with 3 pins, 3 technical falls, 1 major decision, and 2 forfeits, raising his season record to (52 and 0, with 29 pins).

Going (8 and 1) for the weekend were Luke Hottle at 110#, and Sam Lawson at 145#. At (7 and 2) were John Ash at 128#, and Nathan Reynolds at 155#. Sam Whiting had pinned 3 opponents and lost by minor decision twice, at 102#, until a respiratory illness took him out of the competition. Colby Whiting was (5 and 4) in his A-team debut at 78#; and Michael McCumbers was (3 and 6), at 84#, wrestling up from his 70# body weight, to help the team avoid forfeiting the 84# spot each time they wrestled, as the regular 84# Jacob Maldonado was out with illness. Shay Parrish went (0 and 1) at 116#, before dropping out of the competition due to illness. Spencer gave up 6 forfeits in each dual, having no one at those weights, costing them 36 points in each round.

Earning all of their contested wins by pinning their opponents, were Jacob Summers with 9 pins, John Ash with 7, Sam Lawson with 4, and Sam Whiting with 3.

For the weekend, Spencer's individual dual match record was (59 wins and 19 losses), with 36 pins.

Individual dual match records for the season, to date, (323 wins and 190 losses).

On deck, the Spencer Middle wrestling team will participate in their final competition of the season, the Central West Virginia Athletic Conference tournament at Braxton, this Saturday, February, 2, 2008.
