For three quarters Calhoun played its best game of the season, Saturday.

But in the final quarter a depleted Calhoun squad was unable to keep Wirt from going inside and the Tigers went on to post a 64-53 victory over the winless Red Devils.

Calhoun, 0-13, led much of the way and held the lead in the third quarter before the Tigers tied things up heading into the final period.

That final period was when the Red Devils, playing without inside players Josh DeWeese and Justin Gerwig, were unable to stop the Tigers inside duo of Michael Davis and former Calhoun standout Zach Moore. David led the 7-4 Tigers with 20 while Moore, who was a freshman standout for the Red Devils last year, added 19.

For Calhoun Gerwig was the leading scorer with 14 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Andrew Norman backed him with 12 while DeWeese added 11, Josh Cain nine, Harold McCumbers and Chuck Kendall three each and Cai Clothier two.

For Wirt Moore and Davis were the only two to score in double figures.

Jesse Ward, who was the Tigers leading scorer, was held to eight points by the tenacious man-to-man defense of Cain. Ward had a basket early and a lay up late and a pair of free throws and Cain held the high scoring senior to a bucket the rest of the way.

Roy White, a transfer from Ravenswood, had six points for Wirt on a pair of three-point goals while Jim Lemon added five. Wes Cox, Jake Hutchinson and Alex Wilson added two apiece.

Wirt rolled to an easy victory in the junior varsity game, 87-27.

White led the Tigers, 8-1, with 19 while Hutchinson added 18, Jordan Vlatch 14 and Brian Slack 10.

For Calhoun, 0-11, Kendall and Daniel Sims led the way with five each while Tyler Bennett and Dennis Dye added three apiece and Anthony Richards, McCumbers and Jordan Panarello had two apiece.

Quentin Murphy, Stuart Fitzwater and Joe Overbaugh all played but did not score.

Calhoun returns to action Wednesday night with a doubleheader at home against Clarksburg Notre Dame.
