MORE WEIRTON STEELWORKERS LOSE JOBS - 13,000 GONE TO GLOBALIZED STEEL, MOSTLY CHINA

(01/21/2008)
About 220 workers at ArcelorMittal's Weirton are losing their jobs.

A union representative says 91 employees have accepted buyouts.

Some of the mill's remaining workers have been offered transfers to other ArcelorMittal mills.

Employment at the mill is expected to total about 900 after the buyouts and layoffs.

Some 13,000 people once worked at the mills.

That total has been whittled down by layoffs and the shutdown of various operations, with steel manufacturing going mostly to China.
