Once again Calhoun got close but once again the Red Devils failed to get that elusive first win as Clay pulled away at the end for a 53-44 victory Wednesday night.

The Red Devils played inspired ball all the way and had closed to within three points when senior standout Josh DeWeese picked up his fifth personal foul with 2:24 remaining in the game.

His exit was followed seconds later when Justin Gerwig picked up his fifth foul and Clay, 3-7, was able to hold off the late charge.

DeWeese and Andrew Norman led the 0-11 Red Devils with 15 points apiece. DeWeese also had 13 rebounds and four blocks.

The Red Devils also had seven points from Gerwig while Cai Clothier played the best game of his career with five points and eight rebounds coming off the bench.

Harold McCumbers added two points for Calhoun. Josh Cain, Greg Myers, Chuck Kendall, Anthony Richards and Tyler Bennett all played but did not score.

For Clay Dylan Vaughn had 13 while JD Johnson added 12 and Matt Carte 11.

Clay also won the junior varsity game with a 65-11 victory behind the scoring of Steven Perdue (16), Sean Duffield (13) and Nathan Pritt (12).

Calhoun returns to action Friday with a doubleheader at Braxton County.
