The Little Kanawha Bus Company is moving to become a regional transit authority after being given independent status from Community Resources Inc., according to manager, Darlene Harris.

An organizational meeting will be held December 19 at 10 a.m. at the Calhoun County Committee on Aging.

Harris said the change will offer new opportunities for the rural bus company, including the ability to provide better service. The transit authority will likely go into operation in mid-2008.

The Calhoun Commission has appointed Rick Sampson, Mike Ritchie and Diane Ludwig to be members of the authority.

The Calhoun Commission has backed the transit authority formation, believing it will help citizens suffering from rising gasoline costs with low-cost transportation.

The bus company currently operates in Calhoun, Roane and Jackson County, delivering low-cost transportation.

During Wednesday's meeting, Darlene Harris will give a history of the bus service and four officers will be elected to the authority.

Susan O'Connell, executive director of the WV Department of Highways will give a presentation.

There will also be adoption of by-laws and articles of incorporation.
