Calhoun has benefited from eight small grants exceeding $22,000, issued by the Little Kanawha Area Community Foundation.

Four local grants were announced last Thursday during a grant reception held at Grantsville's senior center.

- $500 to the American Lung Association to expand their smoking cessation program for middle school youth in Calhoun and Wirt Counties.

- $500 to the Calhoun County Historical Society to help with renovations in the society's museum.

- $1,000 to the Calhoun County Parks and Recreation Committee to help construct a new campground at Calhoun County Park.

- $1,050 to Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department to help with the purchase of equipment to increase the safety of the firefighters.

Other awards announced during the Grantsville event:

- $500 to Coplin Memorial Clinic to purchase supplies to help increase awareness of flu prevention techniques.

- $1,000 to the Town of Elizabeth to help with Phase 2 of the sidewalk replacement project.

- $1,000 to the Wirt County Development Authority for improvements to Sportsman Park in Elizabeth.

The reception was sponsored by Calhoun Banks and the Calhoun County Committee on Aging.

"We are very excited to be awarding grants back to nonprofits that serve the community in order to help the citizens of Calhoun and Wirt Counties," said Sarah K. Holt, LKACF Representative.

"This grants cycle is due in part to the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, who provided us with matching funds for a challenge grant," Holt said.

"It is also due in part to the LKACF Board members and the community that showed their great support to meet the Babcock challenge so that we could receive the $5,000 in matching funds, that we are awarding tonight," Holt told those attending the reception.

The PACF on December 4th announced several other grants to Calhoun and Wirt County nonprofits:

- $6,425 to Calhoun County Historical Society for renovation to the society's museum.

- $5,000 to Calhoun County Parks and Recreation Committee to develop a new campground at Calhoun County Park.

- $4,466 to Calhoun County Solid Waste Authority to help make improvements to their building to eliminate flooding.

- $3,569 to Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department to help with the purchase of equipment to increase safety for the firefighters.

- $10,000 to Wirt County Development Authority to help with improvements to Sportsman Park in Elizabeth.

- $500 to Wirt County Health Services to help expand their Mobile Dental Unit into Wirt County.
