SUNDAY HUNTING BEGINS THIS WEEKEND - Law Passed Earlier This Year

(10/12/2001)
Sunday hunting begins this weekend in West Virginia, and it looks like the practice is here to stay.

House Minority Leader Charles Trump says an effort to change a new law that allows Sunday hunting in all 55 counties has been dropped for lack of interest.

A legislative committee considered alternatives to Sunday hunting, but Trump says those ideas didn't go anywhere.

The Legislature passed the law earlier this year.

Lawmakers say they intended to permit Sunday hunting only in counties where voters approved it in a referendum. The state Division of Natural Resources takes an opposite view.

DNR officials say they interpret the law to allow Sunday hunting unless voters in a county reject it.

Archery seasons for deer, bear and wild boar begin Saturday. Turkey season begins October 20.
