CHINA MADE TOY HAS DATE RAPE HAZARD

(11/17/2007)
The placing of America's economy in the globalized market has continued to lower the bar on safety to consumers.

If you thought it was bad when 21 million toys surfaced with lead, now there is a recall of a toy tainted with a date rape drug that knocks kids out if they happen to chew a bead from the product.

It's the recall of Aqua Dots, promised to be one of the high-selling toys for the Christmas holidays.

The beads are coated with a toxic chemical that metabolizes into gamma hydroxy butyrate or GHB — the so-called date rape drug.

Aqua Dots, distributed by Spin Master Ltd. in the U.S. is made in China, and was on many retailers' hot toy lists.

With toy fear rising, shoppers are being bombarded with free shipping offers, coupons and discounts to buy this year.

If consumers think they just won't buy toys made in China, it could be difficult because 80% of them are made there.

WalMart kicked off discount sales in early October, after they quit doing lay-aways. Lay-aways was a marketing system that was designed to help consumers who have lower incomes.

Chinese-made mass products have been big hits, such as Fisher-Price's Smart Cycle and Jakks-Pacific EyeClops, a handheld device that magnifies objects.

Brands that suffered recalls such as Mattel Inc.'s preschool brand Fisher-Price and RC2 Corp. — are rebounding, say retailers.

Retailers are counting on parents still shopping for the best prices.
