CABOT PLANS TO DRILL 35 WELLS IN STATE PARK

(11/17/2007)
Cabot Oil & Gas is planning on drilling 35 wells in one of West Virginia's most popular state parks.

Cabot Oil & Gas believes the promise of jobs, tax revenues and donated hiking trails will offset any concerns over its plan for Chief Logan State Park.

The land to create the 4,000-acre park was donated in the 1960s, but the owners kept the gas rights and have leased them to Cabot.

The original deed allows for such drilling.

Governor Manchin's office says state law trumps that deed by forbidding such activity in state parks.

But Cabot is applying for the necessary permits within the next week, the issue could lead to a legal fight or legislative action during the upcoming 2008 session.

Chief Logan hosts up to 800,000 people a year, one of the most-visited of West Virginia's state parks.
