ANNA SAMPSON TAKES 14TH IN STATE FINALS

Calhoun junior Anna Sampson was 14th in the Class AA-A Cross Country state finals held Saturday at Cabell Midland High School.

Sampson covered the 3.1-mile course in 21:14.38 finishing less than a minute out of second place.

Berkeley Springs senior Rachel Buser won with a time of 19:34.16. Second place went to Chanel Alexander of Grafton, who covered the course in 20:14.62, less than a minute ahead of Sampson.

She had the third best time of any runner from the LKC finishing behind only Ritchie's Aly Carpenter and St. Marys' Jennifer McFarland.

Sampson went into the state tournament ranked 30th in the state, but she should move up after finishing 14th among 71 runners. She also had the 15th best time in the regionals. She is the first runner from Calhoun to advance to the state meet.

Grafton won the meet with a score of 41 while Shady Spring was second with a score of 47.

On the boys side in Class AA-A Ravenswood won its eighth straight title with a team score of 31 while Doddridge senior had the best time of any runner regardless of class with a time of 16:06.80.

The only area runner in the boys division was Randy Price of Roane County who was 48th.
