POLICE IDENTIFY WEST FORK BODY AS JOHN STARCHER

(10/18/2007)
The decomposed body of a Calhoun man found September 5th along the West Fork River at Altizer has been positively identified, according to Sgt. J. E. Skidmore of the Grantsville Detachment.

The State Medical Examiner's Office says the victim is John Starcher, 25, who had been living on Daniel's Run and had been missing from his residence since August 25th.

Sgt. Skidmore said the remains have been sent to the Smithsonian Institute for further determination related to cause of death.

Authorities have said it appears that Starcher died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Starcher's body was found on a small island in the West Fork of the Little Kanawha River, adjacent to the Stony Point Church.

Police have indicated a weapon was found nearby.
