Three local volunteers spent last weekend learning the ins and outs of Relay for Life. Barb McKown, Jean Simers and Helen Johnson traveled to Morgantown for a 2-day Relay University training.

Relay for Life is held annually as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The funds raised go toward cancer research and programs for cancer patients, which are offered locally.

Every year, teams raise money throughout the months leading up to the early summer event. A chair and committee members are selected by the teams to organize and recruit for the upcoming year. The Chair for 2008 is Barb McKown. Committee members include: Jean Simers, Helen Johnson, Molly Yoak, Sue Oshoway, Liz Ferrell, JoAnn Straub and Darlene Roberts.

During Relay University, the participants learned recruitment suggestions, new fundraisers, survivor and caregiver recognitions, and other interesting tidbits to ensure a fun and exciting Relay.

This year, the American Cancer Society has added a new component to the Relay for Life ceremony. This is the first time an addition has been made in several years. The Fight Back flag ceremony will allow all participants to take a personal stand against cancer. While attending the training, the participants accepted the plaque for the 2007 Relay.
