JV rolls over Gilmer County

By Roger Propst

Calhoun's Jr. Varsity football team lit up the scoreboard for 56 points Monday night at Red Devil Stadium and shut out the visiting Titans of Gilmer County.

Nick Stevens rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns including scoring jaunts of 70 and 53 yards.

He was backed up by Randy Fluharty's 167 yards and two touchdowns of 38 and 53 yards.

After stopping the Titans on their 1st possession, Calhoun took over the ball at its own 40 yard line.

The Red Devils covered the 60 yards on seven plays, all on the ground.

The big play of the drive was a 21 yard scamper by Randy Fluharty to the Titan 9 yard line.

Ben Laughlin covered the final 9 yards off right guard for a 6-0 lead with 5:49 remaining in the 1st Qtr. Fluharty's run for the two point conversion was good and the lead stretched to 8-0.

The next possession for Gilmer proved disastrous as a 3rd down snap sailed over the head of the Titan quarterback who recovered at his own 6 yard line.

The punt went only to the 27, where Calhoun got the ball and scored on two plays, a 12 yard Laughlin run to the 15, followed by Nick Stevens' 15 yard burst for the touchdown.

A two point conversion run by Fluharty made the score 16-0 at the 3:03 mark of the 2nd quarter.

Calhoun's next drive was thwarted on an interception in the endzone giving Gilmer a 1st down at its own 20.

Red Devil linebacker Caden Arnold returned the favor by intercepting a Titan pass to end their drive at the Gilmer 44 yard line.

The Red Devils were unable to score on the ensuing drive, losing the ball on a fumble at the Titan 27.

Red Devil defensive back Austin Moore ended the subsequent Titan drive by intercepting an errant pass at the Calhoun 30 yard line.

Wasting no time, on the 2nd play from scrimmage Nick Stevens sprinted around the left end and galloped 70 yards down the sideline untouched for the score.

A pass from Gungle to Dennis Dye for the two pointer was good and the score stood at 24-0; that would be the score at the half.

Calhoun blew the game wide open by scoring 26 points in the 3rd quarter to take a 50-0 lead into the 4th quarter.

After an unsuccessful onside kick attempt by Gilmer to open the 2nd half, Nick Stevens again sprinted around the left side and down the sideline for 53 yards and a touchdown.

Defensive end Dillon Mefford recovered a Titan fumble at the Gilmer 38 yard line on the Titan's next possession, and Randy Fluharty scrambled 38 yards for another score, the 2nd in a 30 second span.

Things didn't get any better for the Titans. On their next possession a 4th down punt was blocked by Calhoun's Caden Arnold, picked up and ran in by Mefford for yet another score.

Randy Fluharty finished out the Devil 3rd quarter onslaught with 53 yard run for another touchdown and the 50-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Red Devils final score came with less than a minute remaining on a Fluharty to Dye 4 yard touchdown pass, making the final score Calhoun 56 - Gilmer 0.

The Red Devil defense stymied Gilmer all evening with a swarming run to the ball attitude, and the Titans never seriously threatened to score.
