SHOOTER TOO DRUNK TO TALK - Police say a Mingo County man arrested for shooting another man was too drunk to give officers a statement.

WV STUDENT ON TRIAL FOR STABBING DEATH - Monongalia County prosecutors wasted no time in showing the 7 1/2-inch blade to a jury.

It was the kitchen knife that was used to kill Ryan Johnston more than a year and a half ago.

Testimony began Wednesday in the trial of a former West Virginia University student accused of killing a fellow student after what began as a snowball fight.

Tyler Baumann of Alexandria, Virginia, is charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 12, 2006, slaying.

Ryan, a 21-year-old engineering major from Washington County, Pennsylvania, died from a stab wound to the abdomen after an altercation between two groups at a Beechurst Avenue residence in the early morning hours.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Tyler was arrested for the murder about two weeks later. He denied ever being at the scene in his original statements to police but later described a hallway confrontation with Ryan.

Assistant Monongalia County prosecutor Perri DeChristopher called the murder "senseless, pointless and ridiculous."

Snowballs were being thrown from a porch at 2 a.m. and two groups began to fight.
