Lelah Adams Gibson, 101 - Newcomerstown, Ohio

Lelah O. Gibson, 101, a resident of Newcomerstown for many years, formerly of Calhoun County, W.Va., passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Riverside Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.<

Lelah was born in Calhoun County, W.Va., on Jan. 30, 1906, a daughter of the late U. Grant and Harriett Slider Adams. She was a Methodist by faith and a homemaker for all her adult life. Lelah enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening and canning.

Lelah was preceded in death by husband Harley Cline Gibson, who died on May 29, 1984, and whom she married July 15, 1922. Also deceased are three sons and two daughters, Harley Carol Gibson of West Lafayette, Grant Gibson of Cuyahoga Falls, Elden Gibson of Calhoun County, Thelma Hamric of Kent and Mildred Carpenter of Doyles-town. Lelah was also the last member of her generation of the Adams family, having been preceded in death by sisters, Elizabeth Buchannan, Lula Slider, Mary Kirby, Rosa Starcher and Martha Miler, all of West Virginia, and Belle Husk of Beverly, O.; and brothers, Charles Adams and Joseph Adams, both of West Virginia. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren are also deceased, along with sons-in-law, Victor Hamric and Charles Espenschied, both of Stow.

Lelah is survived by five daughters and two sons, Velma (Mrs. Golden) Starcher and Hannah (Mrs. Chester) Arthur, both of Cuyahoga Falls, Zelma Hamric and Madeline Espenschied, both of Stow, Marcella (Mrs. Thomas) Evans and Stanley Gibson, both of Newcomerstown, and George and wife Peggy Gibson of Kimbolton. Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Kathy Gibson of West Lafayette; a son-in-law, Stephen Carpenter of Doylestown; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services to celebrate Lelah's life will be held on Friday evening at 8 p.m. in the Ourant Funeral Home at Newcomerstown. Randle Browne, Lelah's grandson, will conduct the services. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Cemetery, Calhoun County, W.Va., at a later date. Visiting hours will also be held in the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 until the 8 p.m. funeral.
